More About the Speaker:
Richard K. Shields, PT, PhD, FAPTA, is professor, chair, and department executive officer of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science within the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Shields received his post baccalaureate degree in physical therapy from the Mayo Clinic, a master’s degree in exercise physiology, and a PhD degree in exercise physiology from the University of Iowa. Dr. Shields managed the acute spinal cord injury program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for several years. During this time, Dr. Shields developed several lines of research that focused on the impact of exercise on various tissues/systems including muscle, bone, metabolism, and cognitive health in people with and without central nervous system injury or disease. He holds medical device patents from inventions that he designed to log and deliver therapeutic stress to tissues of people during exercise. Dr. Shields’ clinical research strives to improve the health of people who suffer from reduced activity from paralysis, obesity, injury, or age. Recently, he developed a novel database that is benchmarking novel student outcomes, including debt, among Academic Physical Therapy Programs. Dr. Shields receives funding from the National Institutes of Health and has received funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as several private foundations. Dr. Shields has published over 130 scientific papers and has delivered over 300 invited scientific presentations.

Dr. Shields is the recipient of several prestigious awards throughout his career. These include the Neurology Research Excellence Award; the Mayo Clinic Outstanding Alumnus Award; the Williams National Research Award; the Maley Award for Research Excellence; the Catherine Worthingham Fellow Award; the 48th Mary McMillan Lecture Award; the Outstanding Mentor and Teaching Award, University of Iowa; and the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence, University of Iowa.
