Title: Nutritional Considerations for Optimal Health. What is Our Role and Responsibility as Health Care Providers?

Course objectives:

By the end of the presentation, the attendee will be able to:

  1. Explain importance of proper hydration in maintaining overall health.
  2. Discuss easy ways simplify portion control and carbohydrate counting.
  3. Explore current recommendations on butter, margarine, and various oils.
  4. Understand the important role of protein in tissue repair and tissue breakdown.
  5. Explain nutritional value of raw versus processed foods.
  6. Understand nutritional impact of sugar versus sugar substitutes.
  7. Explain dietary considerations for individuals on certain anticoagulant medications.
  8. Discuss the benefits and possible concerns related to use of common dietary supplements.
  9. Understand benefits and potential concerns related to common fad diets.
  10. Understand the importance of nutritional considerations and education in MIPS reporting.

More About the Speakers:

Lori Madiara, PT, DPT, MSHA, Fox Rehabilitation
Lori has over 30 years of diverse PT clinical experience and 16 years of PT academic experience as an Associate Professor teaching PTA education for 10 years at Lehigh Carbon Community College and 6 years as a faculty member and Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education for DeSales University’s DPT program. Lori currently works for Fox Rehabilitation with a clinical focus on geriatric home visits. She has taught nutritional considerations for optimal health and concepts of health and wellness promotion in physical therapy for both the PTA and PT programs, and has a personal interest in educating her students and patients in the importance of understanding nutrition’s role in optimizing health and controlling chronic health conditions. Lori completed a BS in physical therapy at Stony Brook University, a MS in Health Administration at St Joseph’s University, and completed her advanced DPT degree at Arcadia University. She has completed several continuing education courses in nutrition and is currently enrolled in a Nutritional and Integrative Medicine for Mental Health Professionals certification course. As a physical therapist focused primarily on care of the geriatric population Lori integrates her knowledge in nutrition to augment her physical therapy practice, promoting improved nutritional awareness in her patients in an effort to improve their overall health and assist with chronic disease management.

Kate Boardman
Kate Boardman, MS, RD, CSOWM, LDN, is clinical coordinator for the St. Luke’s medical (non- surgical) weight management program. A board-certified specialist in Obesity & Weight Management, Kate received her bachelors in nutrition from East Carolina University and her masters in nutrition from James Madison University. She has previously worked in a variety of healthcare settings including: acute care, long term care, and outpatient clinics.

At St. Luke’s she works closely with patients on a variety of non-surgical approaches to weight loss, including providing ongoing monitoring, follow up and support. Just recently, Kate and her team were the recipients of Robard Corporation’s outstanding achievement award in recognition of exceptional performance and innovative contributions to the New Direction weight loss program.
