Licensure Renewal FAQ

  • Licensure renewal for PT and PTAs is every two years - on years ending in even numbers.
  • You still need to maintain the correct liability insurance. More details for the state license can be found on the State Board of Physical Therapy.

ALL contact hours mentioned MUST be pre-approved by the PA State Board of Physical Therapy:

  • Any course offered by PPTA or APTA that relates to clinical content is approved for PA.

What continuing education do I need for licensure renewal?

Physical Therapist without direct access certification:

  • 30 contact hours which includes:
    • Contact hours in either general or evaluative content.

Physical Therapist with direct access certification:

  • 30 contact hours which includes:
    • 10 hours of evaluative content, the remaining hours can be in evaluative or general content.

Physical Therapist Assistant:

  • 30 contact hours which includes:
    • Four (4) hours in responding to emergency situations.
      • CPR training is an example.

For both PTs and PTAs:

  • Two (2) hours of child abuse training if you have done this before, and three (3) hours if this is the first time taking the training.
  • Two (2) hours of ethics and jurisprudence.
