Course Title: Building the Foundation of a Socially Responsible Profession

Course Description:
Transforming society, as movement experts, entail that we as practitioners also become adept in navigating and applying important skills. As outlined in the Guiding Principles that support the APTA Vision: The physical therapy profession embraces cultural competence as a necessary skill to ensure best practice in providing physical therapist services by responding to individual and cultural considerations, needs, and values. There is also a need for cultivating diversity in the physical therapy workforce to reflect the diversity of the communities and society we serve. How do we become more culturally competent practitioners so that we can navigate the diverse conversations and interactions while ensuring that our interventions are evidence based? There is no one route, there are different ways to achieve a common goal and they are being explored at different levels. Explore the benefits of a holistic admissions approach in engaging underrepresented minority groups, community outreach programs to raise awareness in as young as elementary schoolchildren, and engagement opportunities for professionals and students. Learn various approaches in cultural competence initiatives at individual, employer, component, and national levels.

More About the Speakers:
Fatmata Kabia, MPH, EdD (c), is an experienced administrator with over a decade of work history in graduate education and a current Doctoral of Education candidate focused in leadership education at Rutgers University. Fatmata serves as the Co-Chair of admissions, program development analyst, and leads the diversity task force in the Doctorate of Physical therapy program at Rutgers School of Health Professions.

Jazmine Tooles, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at MossRehab in Woodbury, NJ. Jazmine is the cultural diversity SIG leader at MossRehab, serves as the committee chair for the PPTA minority affairs committee, and is the APTANJ executive council secretary and chair of the cultural diversity committee. Jazmine has lectured at the local, state, and national level on cultural diversity in healthcare.

Maria Cuilan Aguila, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist and practice owner at Life in Motion Physical Therapy. Maria is passionate in advocating movement for health, wellness, and disease prevention in culturally diverse communities. Maria is an adjunct professor at Rutgers University and serves as the Director at Large for the APTANJ. Maria received the Societal Impact Award through the APTA in 2019.
