Title: Shaping: Principles of Operant Conditioning Used to Improve Gait-Related Outcomes for Community-Dwelling Individuals with Chronic Stroke

Course description:
Shaping is an operant conditioning technique used to change behavior. The principles of shaping can be used to drive volitional engagement, saliency and intensity during a gait-related intervention session. Use may lead to positive, lasting gait-related outcomes for ambulatory individuals living with chronic stroke. A prospective repeated measures within group research design used to evaluate the treatment effect of shaping applied during part-task, pre-gait activity will be presented and then analyzed in light of the Clinical Practice Guideline to Improve Locomotor Function Following Chronic Stroke, Incomplete Spinal Injury, and Brain Injury. The participant will leave with ideas that can be immediately incorporated into clinical practice.
