Title: The Physical Therapist Role in the Emergency Department presented by: Ryan Thorsen, PT, DPT

Objectives:

  • Identify and describe the roles and responsibilities of the physical therapist in the Emergency Department (ED)
  • Describe essential screening assessments and protocols that would be important in this environment
  • Identify the most common diagnoses that a physical therapist may encounter in this specific setting and select the most appropriate interventions
  • Describe the complexity of the environment and the impact that a PT can have in the ED
  • Discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment in this setting and how to appropriately prioritize the patients
  • Examine the evidence on effectiveness of the Physical Therapist role in the Emergency Department
  • Analyze the pros and cons for implementing Physical Therapists in Emergency Department

Course description:
Increasing demands and concerns within the frequently overpopulated emergency departments (ED) have resulted in physical therapists providing increasingly specialized services and expertise in this area of acute care. Physical therapists, also internationally known as physiotherapists, have already been implemented into the ED and function as primary care providers in several countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. As of 2014, 23 hospital systems in the United States have reported utilizing physical therapist services in the ED, with an average of 1.7 full-time PT’s per week. In addition to members of our own Physical Therapy community, many healthcare disciplines have a limited understanding regarding PT’s role in this type of setting. This course will introduce the growing trends in the implementation of physical therapists in the ED and will describe the roles and responsibilities of the PT. In addition, this course will highlight other screening assessments utilized, describe the complexity of diagnoses in this environment, and provide an additional summary on the evidence supporting PT’s in the ED.

Course approved for: .5 direct access and .5 general contact hours
