Topic: "Application of Functional Electical Stimulation (FES) in Neurologic Patient Populations" presented by Julienne Brown, PT, DPT, NCS, ATP and Robin Cvitanov, PT, DPT, NCS

Course Description: For persons with neurologic disorders, recovery and maintenance of optimal function is critical. Physical Therapists may use many modalities during the rehabilitation process. This presentation will focus on the role of functional electrical stimulation (FES) to promote function.

At the end of the program, attendees will be able to:

  • Define functional electrical stimulation.

  • Describe the principles of functional electrical stimulation.

  • Discuss current research related to functional electrical stimulation and its use in the neuro-rehabilitation.

  • Identify patient populations who may benefit from functional electrical stimulation.

  • Identify specific clinical applications where the addition of FES may be advantageous.

More About The Speakers:

Julienne Brown, PT, DPT, NCS, ATP, is a physical therapist who provides direct outpatient care services in the Physical Therapy Department and Assistive Technology Center at Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital where she works in the outpatient Wheelchair Seating Clinic. Julie received her BS in Exercise Science and her DPT from the University of Delaware. Julie is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Her outpatient treatment focus is on adolescents and adults with neurologic diagnoses with specialization in the evaluation and treatment of the spinal cord injury patient population. Julie is involved in evaluating patients for manual and power wheelchairs, delivery, and training with mobility devices and other patient care equipment in the seating clinic. She participates in program development for the spinal cord injury program at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital and has presented locally on topics related to spinal cord injury, wheelchair prescription, ad seating and positioning. In her free time, Julie enjoys bring active and spending time with her young sons ages 5 and 7.

Robin Cvitanov, PT, DPT, NCS, is a physical therapist who provides direct outpatient care services in the Physical Therapy Department at Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital. Robin received her BS in Psychology from Penn State University and her DPT from Duke University. Robin is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Her outpatient treatment focus is on adults with neurologic diagnoses with specialization in the evaluation and treatment of the spinal cord injury patient population as well as using functional electrical stimulation in treatment. In her free time, Robin enjoys spending time with her family.
